"44 & 66"

44's a BMW; 66's a Yamaha, 44's just like mother; 66 owns Omaha. 44 & 66; 66 & 44, What a piston; what a bore, 66 & 44. 66's a long old jet plane, goin' to a folk festival, 44's a hot jazz player, yeah; and his belly's never full. 44 & 66; 66 & 44, You got to push what you can't pull, 66 & 44. 66 is modern poetry; 44 is modern art, 66 ain't got no mystery; 44 ain't got no heart. 44 & 66; 66 & 44, Flick your Bic at the right door, 66 & 44. 66's a brand new baby bouncin' on his grandma's knee, 44's a long old coffin, open arms for you and me. 44 & 66; 66 & 44, Say goodbye and close the door, 66 & 44. 66 is Waylon Jennings, and he can't find his cologne, 44 is Nelson Eddy, and he's crying on the telephone. 44 & 66; 66 & 44, Outlaws don't dig to be poor, no, 66 & 44. 66 is just a number; 44 is just a gig, 66, apprentice plumber; 44 still wants to make it big. 44 & 66; 66 & 44, Add 'em up, you get some more, 66 & 44.

"Don't You Think Too Much"

Just one look at you, and I can see where you are, Ah, you're down in the blue hole; no one knows how far, Oh-o-o-o, little darlin', Show me the right touch. I know how it all can spin around like a computer gone mad, Bad times and the past times and all the trouble that you have, Oh-o-o-o-o, little darlin' Don't you think too much. Some people think they're gonna do themselves and this world a lot of good, By thinkin' 'bout their whole gig 'til it's all well understood, But oh-o-o, little darlin', All around this little world there's a hush. One little child, one little child in just one day, Brightens up this whole universe in such a special way, So oh-o-o-o, little darlin', Don't you think too much. Too many people too soon, ah, you know they're gonna wake up dead, To find they spent their whole lives just knockin' 'round in their head, Oh-o-o-o, little darlin', Where we're goin' there ain't no rush. This world will abuse you, confuse you and lose you, it's true, You gotta get down to your instincts if you're, if you're gonna make it hrough, So oh-o-o-o little darlin', Don't you think too much. Well, it may sound like about the craziest thing that you have ever heard, Ah, but you just can't think too much if you're gonna sing just like a bird, Oh-o-o little darlin', You can't fly if you clutch. If you don't step outside of it, ah, you can't see that it's whole, I ain't tryin' to tell you nothin' but what I, what I say to my own soul, I say oh-o-o-o little darlin', Don't you think too much. Yeah, I say Oh-o-o-o... little darlin', Don't you think too much.

"Bozo's in Love Again"

Bozo's woes would fill a well, Yeah, he looks bad even when he's doin' swell. His eyes are a definition of bereft, Yeah, he looks like somethin' that the cat left. Uh oh, the bozo, he's in love again. Uh oh, the bozo, he's in love again. Ho ho, he met her at the disco, On the west side of Saint Louie MO. She put her rawboned fingers to his pants, He said, "Baby, I can't dance." Uh oh, the bozo, he's in love again. Uh oh, the bozo, he's in love again. Ah well, he drove back to Aloha Trailer Park, She did a lot of bright things in the dark. She told him she was never late for work, He said, "I love you"; she said, "You poor jerk." Uh oh, the bozo, he's in love again. Uh oh, the bozo, he's in love again. Well, he followed her to the Hallmark Cards and Gifts, 5-oh-9 he offered her a lift. 5-oh-10 she got in her own car, 5-oh-11 he was sitting in a bar. he was singin', uh oh, the bozo, he's in love again. Uh oh, the bozo, he's in love again. 2:12 back in his hotel, He called her and a man said, "Go to hell." 2:16 he gets a hamburger, edge of town, Broken-hearted and homeward bound. Uh oh, the bozo, he's in love again. Uh oh, the bozo, he's in love again. 3:16 p.m. a little roadside cafe, Nicotine and caffeine, his recent past away. The waitress said, "You look bad, and then she coughed," Bozo said, "What time do you get off?" Uh oh, the Bozo, he's in love again. Uh oh, the Bozo, he's in love again. He just another bozo, he's in love again. Just another b-b-bozo, he's in love (he been all around the world, but he) Just another bozo, he's in love again. (He's a real sharp guy, but he's) a bozo [repeat and fade]

"Twenty or So"

Put old winter in the closet; he wears too many clothes, Take down the snow fence; put up the cows. Sweet spring I smell her, the musk of her thighs, With her feet in the muck, and her hair in the skies. I was thinkin' about my hundred old lovers, How we'd weave the cloth of our sleep, how we'd kick off the covers. But where you've all gone to I'll never know, And maybe there were only 50 or so. May you find great apartments with very low rent, May you always have a friend when your money is spent. May your parents live long; may your debts all be paid, May your clothes fit you right; may you all be well laid. May you all get great jobs; may you travel in France, May your cars always start; may you have hot romances. May your children be sturdy; may you swim in the sea, May you smile a little if you think of me. I'm so happy; spring's come back again, I am so horny; I would love to see you all again. But where you've all gone to I'll never know, And maybe there were only twenty or so.

"Ring around the Moon"

We don't know when we came; you know it's been so long, Everything is the same; so let's do one more song. Ring around the moon; long, long time 'til day, Play me one more tune; please don't go away. You be the mandolin; I'll be the steel guitar, You dance out and in; I'll cry up so far. Long, long time 'til day, Play me one more tune; please don't go away. Everybody's been alone, been to the parade, Tryin' to find the bones of this masquerade. And there's a ring around the moon; long, long time 'til day, Play me one more tune; please don't go away. Love she always passes lightly and away, Like a lioness gets restless when she comes to stay. And there's a ring around the moon; long, long time 'til day, Play me one more tune; please don't go away. Pickin' on the strings, tapping of your feet, Well, these are age-old things, but who can say how sweet. When there's a ring around the moon; long, long time 'til day, Play me one more tune; please don't go away.

"Downtown"

Well, yes, I could stay home, read a book or two, Try to get a little bit better at some of these bad things I do. But the night it is young; so am I for a while, So I put on my hat and coat and pants and my boots and smile. And I'm a gonna go [chorus:] Downtown, downtown tonight, I'm a gonna go all around the town, check out all the sights, I will be back in the mornin', feelin' bad or good, Well, I do what I want, and I don't do what I should. Well, some people tell me that they love the mountains best, Far as I can see it's just one big wilderness. I've seen squirrels writin' tickets, dolphins drivin' cars, Blowfish blowin' tubas, grizzly bears in the bars. And I'm a gonna go [repeat chorus] Well now if you've ever checked it out, you know just what I mean, There's always a few surprises in that same old scene. You might meet some fella who can really blow the horn, Make you glad for a change you done got born. Don't ya wanna go [repeat chorus] Yes, I might get lucky, run into my friend, Jane, Walk to her apartment in the shiny city rain. Put on a little record; I get so long and tall, I wish I was the wallpaper; Jane could be the wall. And I'm a gonna go [repeat chorus] Yeah and when those lights come up, so soon, so soon, We might sit and play some music in that trashed-out livin' room. Keep playin' that music 'til the dawn's early light, Laugh like no one's business, Man ain't that the life. And I'm a gonna go [repeat chorus] Have you ever known the magic hour just before the dawn? When the mornin' is still sleeping, but the night is not yet gone. And you're walkin' home from some little joint with someone you love, With the moon and stars and the bells and birds all ringin' up above. Don't ya wanna go [repeat chorus]

"People Hide Their Love"

I went out last night to a cabaret, I got home this mornin' at the break of day. [chorus:] People hide their love, People hide their love, People hide their love, People hide their love. Knockin' on my door; I know there's nobody home, But I go on in; talk to the telephone. [repeat chorus] In the dimlit crowd, in a creaking bone, in the laugh too loud, in the midnight groan. [repeat chorus] I went out last night to a little cabaret, I got home this mornin' at the break of day.

"Lullaby at the Edge of Town"

Golden wheat and price of bread; never meant to come so far, Tractors dozin' like dinosaurs; all LBJ's old scars. All across the United States lookin' for relief to get inside, Blood and flags flappin' on the moon; The boys tried and they tried and tried and tried, ayay. Underwear dancin' on the line from sea to shining sea, Drunk car came lurching to a red light stop; it's just how it had to be. Meet you down at the factory just before they feed the beast, We'll get our picture taken standing side by side while all of Dallas sleeps. Golden wheat and taste of bread; kid's t-shirt is much too small, That Ford will never move, move, move again; it don't rain much in fall. Don't rain much in fall; rain much in the fall; the fall, In the fall, the fall, in the fall, the fall [fade].

"Early"

Early one morning I walked out alone, I looked down the street; no one was around. The sun was just comin' up over my home, On Hickory Street in a little farm town. And [chorus:] Oooo-ee, ain't the mornin' light pretty, When the dew is still heavy, so bright and early. My home on the range; it's a one-horse town, And it's alright with me. Plow broke the prairie, the prairie gave plenty, The little towns blossomed and soon there were many. Scattered like fireflies across the dark night, And one was called Early, and they sure named it right. 'Cause [repeat chorus] Many dry summers parched all the fields, They burnt the fine colors and cut down on the yield. But the rain has returned to wash away our tears, It's the fullest green summer that We've seen for years. And [repeat chorus]

"Beatniks Gonna Rise Again"

Busted our conga, rusted out Dodge, California dreamin' of an international hodgepodge. An old roach in the ashtray, a closed sidewalk cafe, A saxophone in pieces, a moth-eaten beret. A little bird told me, I heard it on the wind, All of them old beatniks, ah they're gonna rise again. Daddy-o and mommy-o, kiddie-o and me, To a beat cool city landscape in the key of E. Where all our styles of poetry will leap right off the page, And ride upon a hi-igh lonesome riff across the stage. Our lovers will meet us mysteriously in rainy night hotels, And we'll all be always traveling, sometimes under spells. Oh praise the battered sunflower, grows in the Kwik Trip lot, Ah, we'll all get naked in little pairs, and we'll get so loose and so hot. We'll troop across the country; bring joy to the Midwest, Redesign our houses to the shape of a gentle breast. And we'll laugh away the government; we'll laugh away the years, When we get tired of laughing away, ah, we'll taste each other's tears. We'll taste the cool spring water and learn where it can be found, We'll take a little taste of everything, and we'll hand the knowledge down. A little bird told me, I heard it on the wind, All of them old beatniks, ah they're gonna rise again. Daddy-o and mommy-o, kiddie-o and me, To a beat cool city landscape in the key of ecstasy.

"Comin' into You"

Look at the city; ain't it a pity, There ain't nothin' nobody can do. Take a change of heart, tear it all apart, Oh put love and leave it to the wheel and start anew. [chorus:] Oh baby I'm comin', oh honey I'm comin', Yeah, I'm comin' when the day is through. Oh honey, I'm comin', yeah I'm comin', And I'm comin' right into you. Up at the office, 25 stories, 25 stories, ain't one of 'em true. Man got a cigar, smokin' old fire, Yeah, but if he gets a chance, is he gonna burn you? [repeat chorus] I'm a gonna get funny, gonna get a little money, Then I'm gonna fly away in Katmandu. I'm a gonna get punny; grab my just flat, hot damn darlin', She's, she's, she's, she's, she's, she's a gonna come, too. Oh baby, I'm comin, yeah I'm comin', Honey I'm comin', when the day is through. Oh honey I'm comin', yeah I'm comin', And I'm comin' right into you. What're you crazy? Take that coat off, Take that shirt off and the rest of that, too. Leave a little necklace, like to hear it jingle, jangle, And I tingle when I tangle in a jungle of you. Oh honey I'm comin', baby I'm comin', Yeah I'm comin' when the day is through. Oh honey I'm comin', yeah I'm comin', And I'm comin' right into you. Oh honey I'm comin', yeah I'm comin', Baby oh ha ha ha when the day is through. Oh honey I'm comin', yeah ah ha, Oh ah ah yeah when the day.... [fade] Transcribed by Shirley M. Cottle.
